What is a CPA?

A & C Accounting and Taxation Services is a CPA firm which follows the high standards required by CPA Australia.

A CPA, or Certified Public Accountant, is an individual who has met certain requirements in education, experience and examination. This usually requires a 3 year University degree in accountancy, 3 years supervised working experience under a qualified CPA, and successful completion of professional exams and the CPA Program.

A CPA is also required to undertake continuous study /training throughout the duration of their CPA membership.

CPAs are certified to provide a broad range of financial advisory and external accounting services for their clients. Some services provided by public accountants include assurance (audit), tax compliance and advisory, mergers and acquisitions due diligence, and estate and financial planning.

In order to complete the CPA certification process, public accountants must pass the CPA exam and work in public accounting for at least three years. CPAs are not only required to pass a professional exam, but they must also meet continuing professional education (CPE) requirements on an annual basis to maintain their license.

CPA Australia members who wish to establish themselves in public practice, whether within or outside Australia, can undertake the Public Practice Program with CPA Australia to develop their non-technical skills such as business planning, risk management and practice development.

The Public Practice Program has two components:

  • Practice Management distance learning program
  • Public Practice Program Residential

Successful completion of both components is required to be eligible to apply for a Public Practice Certificate. The Public Practice Program has been developed to help members establish themselves in public practice. It builds on the technical expertise and experience gained from the CPA Program and through hands on business experience. It focuses on non-technical skills such as strategic planning, marketing, risk management and practice development.
